Fistula and Dialysis Machine

I am very anxious of my mom's feeling on injection. She had fistula arm operation three weeks ago because they have to remove the catheter on her neck.

Emotional support is very important at this stage, I was anxious because she might have hypertension that may affect on her condition. She has to be calm and prepare her to pain and expectations.

Her pain tolerance is high. I applied her a natural cooling cream to ease the pain around the fistula area. Today it's her 12th dialysis and so far she is doing well on her dialysis session. Her schedule is twice a week.

Chills During Hemodialysis

November 16, 2016

On her 8th dialysis she got chills for an assumptive reason that her catheter is already mature (1 month) and she might got infected. She said she can't breathe for unexplained reason. Her watcher at that time was my aunt and she just waiting outside. The nurses gave her hydrocotisone, d5050 and oxygen. Mom was complaining earlier that her neck was hurt when a nurse was removing plasters tape on her neck, afterwards she got chilled.

High Phosphorus

The kidneys help control the amount of phosphate in the blood. Extra phosphate is filtered by the kidneys and passes out of the body in the urine. Mom's phosphorus level is high based on her blood test result last week. Her kidneys do not excrete enough phosphate. High phosphorus in her blood caused by the kidney problem.

The blood test results shows good signs of her electrolytes ( calcium, potassium, sodium) except her phosphate. Getting and preparing food for mom is too delicate, making sure all are balance. All are serve in low and less than what a normal person eat.

Fish are high in phosphate, should kidney patients limit the fish especially salmon and other fish that has no scales. It is very important to give right amount of meal and balance.

Avoid Fruits that are High in Potassium

The kidneys help keep potassium at a normal level. Since mom's kidney is no longer working we keep in mind that some fruits that are high in potassium are needed to avoid.

Normal range of Potassium: 3.4-5.3 mmol/L

Mom's blood test result shows on her result is normal in Potassium and Level. However her creatinine is too high.

Potassium can cause stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, intestinal gas, and other side effects. Too much potassium is UNSAFE and can cause feelings of burning or tingling, generalized weakness, paralysis, listlessness, dizziness, mental confusion, low blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, and death.
